Will It Keep Appreciating in Value?

It's always hard to see your favorite cryptocurrency lose value, and anyone who's been involved with bitcoin over the years knows how quickly that can happen. However, towards the end of 2017, the cryptocurrency broke through the $10,000 mark and continued on a positive trajectory. This was a rather strange (if exciting) turn of events, and raised the question of whether it would continue to increase in value as the years went on. Many investors were very happy.

It's important to note that the total number of Bitcoins created will be capped at 21 million. Of course, supply and demand will determine how popular and valuable the cryptocurrency will be over the many years to come. Coincidentally, the price of bitcoin has been remarkably volatile since early 2013, when the digital currency first began to rise in value. Like any stock, currency, or commodity, bitcoin bounced between highs and lows in a big way. The economy was really affected.

But is this pattern something to be expected in the future? Will it continue to fluctuate in such a striking way? Will it stabilize and even out? Or will it plummet and become almost irrelevant? These are common questions among investors.

At this point, there remains a notable divide between hardcore cryptocurrency enthusiasts and those who don't have much faith in bitcoin. The first group is certain that bitcoin, being the original cryptocurrency, should have a total cryptocurrency market capitalization of hundreds and thousands of dollars. These advocates believe that in the future, blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies will completely replace and eliminate standard fiat currencies. You'll likely see these individuals accumulating various cryptocurrencies with the goal of amassing large amounts of bitcoin. They have a plan.

On the other hand, those who aren't so avid believers believe that bitcoin is in quite the bubble, stating that there isn't really any fundamental reason behind why the digital currency should continue on an upward path. These detractors believe that while bitcoin is popular right now, it will soon lose its luster and subsequently its value as more individuals begin to sell it in favor of something else. The market may change.

Beyond these groups, there remains a selection of people in the middle of these debates for and against bitcoin. Generally speaking, these people are open to the concept of cryptocurrencies and may buy into them, but they aren't really sure how to put a price or value on them, especially in the long term. It may be fair to say that cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are here to stay, although it's quite likely that advances in technology will allow something much more stable to emerge. They remain uncertain.

Not only that, but it's highly unlikely that banks, financial institutions, and governments would allow something to become so valuable that they don't get a cut of it. This could potentially lead to government-backed cryptocurrencies emerging as an entity in the future. With this being debated, something that is more centralized has the potential to be much more stable in terms of value as well, leading to more trust in a cryptocurrency and possibly a decline for bitcoin. The future may hold surprises.

Is It Still Worth Investing in Bitcoin?

You would think that after bitcoin had such an attractive 2017, rising to such valuable heights, that it would still be something that people would want to buy. For some people, it's still considered a great investment. For others, not so much. Of course, nothing is guaranteed in the world of finance - and this applies to all types of finance, not just cryptocurrencies.

However, anyone who decides to invest in bitcoin should be aware of how risky it can be. As we have mentioned before, it is a very volatile digital currency, which is the biggest risk behind it. This is not just something that has become an issue recently, but something that has plagued Bitcoin for pretty much its entire 10-year existence.

If the cryptocurrency were to enter the mainstream world and be recognized as an international means of exchange, it is quite likely that its value would continue to rise, and quite dramatically at that. However, such a scenario is not certain, at least for the time being.

Because banks and financial institutions are not really worried about bitcoin and other digital currencies, it does not really pose a threat to the global economy for now. This gives it a bit more of a stable position in the world, making it a fairly safe investment as far as value is concerned. Of course, if the value of bitcoin continues to rise and regulators start to see it as a major threat, then there could be a crackdown, which could hurt the value of bitcoin in the process.

Of course, it is always better to invest in something when the price is lower and then, as the value of it increases, so does your investment in it. So if you are thinking about getting into the bitcoin cryptocurrency, or even other altcoins, now may be a good time to do so. Whether or not it will skyrocket and become a global phenomenon that can be used anywhere and everywhere is still unknown. The fact that it has the potential to do so, however, is a pretty strong attraction.

Does the Future Hold Anything Negative for Bitcoin?

It is not only the future that could have a negative impact on bitcoin. The present already has its share of problems. Unfortunately, it has a reputation for being used by criminals, especially in the online world. Due to the fact that transactions with bitcoin are anonymous and pretty much untraceable, this works very much in favor of criminal activity.

Furthermore, the idea that the rapid rise in the price of bitcoin could at times be a bubble waiting to burst would definitely prove to be a negative outcome. It has been speculated on several occasions that the value of bitcoin could rise as high as $40,000, and there have even been comments that it could rise even higher. However, evidence from previous times when its price has risen sharply shows that the cryptocurrency has crashed and stayed low for a considerable amount of time before bouncing back. Of course, no one wants to lose money, and if bitcoin continues to experience such violent fluctuations, people will likely turn away from it.

However, this may just be a test phase for the bitcoin cryptocurrency. Despite the fact that it has been available for purchase for about 10 years now, some still see it as the revolution the financial world has been waiting for. It is true that many world-changing technologies and systems have their problems and bubbles in the early stages. Many have commented that what is happening with bitcoin right now is actually very normal. However, there is no guarantee that it will become anything more than it is now. The early stage bubbles cannot be relied upon as a precursor to world domination for bitcoin.

What Comes Next for Bitcoin?

While bitcoin has its fair share of negative issues, it is still a very relative currency. Most of the world's bitcoin transactions, in terms of volume, take place in China. Of course, China is a huge manufacturing power these days, which means it remains relevant through trade and other such functions.

Perhaps one of the biggest issues that could affect bitcoin in the future is the potential for other cryptocurrencies to become as valuable or even more valuable than it. There are so many altcoins available now that people do not have to look far to find one to invest in. Those who are loyal to bitcoin believe that this will not happen because bitcoin will remain as the original cryptocurrency. However, this argument is somewhat flawed in itself. Even if BTC payments are made, the vast majority of cryptocurrency holders store it in wallets to see its value increase. This leaves quite a gap for other digital currencies to simply step up and achieve a similar status to bitcoin.

If there is one thing that can be said about bitcoin with a high degree of certainty, it is that the price of bitcoin will remain somewhat volatile in the future. Time will tell how long this will remain an issue for the cryptocurrency. However, there doesn't seem to be any particular concern from regulatory institutions, so things don't really seem to be changing as far as the decentralization status of bitcoin is concerned. Therefore, things will most likely continue to fluctuate as far as its value is concerned.

Could Bitcoin Break Even More Value Barriers?

The short answer is yes. In fact, there is a good chance that bitcoin will continue to appreciate and break the $20,000 and $30,000 barriers, and possibly even higher. It didn't take that long for it to go over $10,000, and by the end of 2017 it was close to the $20,000 mark. For the time being, bitcoin is very capable of going beyond what it has already experienced.

To put it bluntly, the future of bitcoin is not guaranteed one way or the other. It has its great advantages, but there are also some important disadvantages to keep in mind when thinking about buying the cryptocurrency. On the other hand, it could be the best investment you have ever made. Just make sure that you check its status frequently so that you know how to act in times of potentially huge dips.
