Responsible gambling: the tools, and where to find help
Deposit caps, cool-off periods, self-exclusion and the US helplines that answer 24/7 — what each tool does and where to switch it on.

Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It stops being entertainment the moment the money stops being spare, and the warning signs are almost always practical rather than dramatic: deposits that get topped up before payday, sessions that run past the time you set, losses you would rather not explain to anyone. Every licensed operator has to give you tools to stop that drift, and none of them cost anything to use.
Free help in the United States, right now
- National Problem Gambling Helpline — 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537). Call, text or chat, 24 hours a day, every day, in English and Spanish. Confidential; the person answering is trained, not a salesperson.
- National Council on Problem Gambling — 1-800-522-4700, ncpgambling.org. Referrals to treatment in your state and material for family members.
- Gamblers Anonymous — gamblersanonymous.org. In-person and online meetings, no fees, no registration.
- Gam-Anon runs the same kind of meetings for partners and family.
The five tools every licensed account has
1. Deposit limits
A ceiling on what can enter the account per day, week or month. This is the single most effective control, because it works before the money is in play rather than after. Tightening a limit takes effect immediately; loosening it is deliberately slow, and that delay is the point.
2. Loss and wager limits
A cap on net losses or total stakes over a period. Useful if you reload from a balance rather than from a card, where a deposit limit never gets touched.
3. Session reminders and time-outs
A clock that interrupts play, and a short cool-off — usually 24 hours to six weeks — that locks the account without closing it. Use it the first time you notice you are chasing.
4. Self-exclusion
A long block, typically a year or more, which cannot be lifted on request during the term. Operator-level exclusion covers one brand. State programmes go further: a single form can cover every operator licensed in that state, and in several states it covers retail casinos too. Check your state regulator's site for the current form and term options.
5. Reality on the statement
Every account has a history page showing deposits, withdrawals and net position. Read it monthly. People remember wins and round losses down; the statement does neither.
What to do if you are worried about someone else
Do not settle the debt quietly and do not take over the banking without saying so — both tend to extend the problem. Call the helpline yourself first; the NCPG line takes calls from family members and will walk through the practical steps, including how state self-exclusion forms work when the person is willing to sign one.
Where we stand
We list commercial links to gambling sites and we say so on every page that carries one. We do not rank an operator higher for a bigger bonus, and we do not accept payment to remove a payout complaint from a review. If you are excluded, or trying to stop, the most useful thing we can tell you is to close this page and call the number above.
