How to Bet on Baseball

The Moneyline

The Money Line is a straight bet on a single baseball game. In this bet, you pick a team to win the game. If your team wins, you win the bet. The negative sign in front of the Yankees odds indicates that they are the favorites. Odds of -170 mean that for every $1.70 you risk on the Yankees, you will win $1.00. The Royals have odds of +150, which means that for every $1.00 you risk on the Royals, you stand to win $1.50.

You can see here that you're being asked to risk more money for less payoff by betting on the Yankees. Sportsbooks set the odds this way to make both sides of every bet worthwhile. Without the money line, there would be no reason to bet on the underdog in the first place.

The Runline

The run line in baseball is similar to the moneyline except that it also adds a point spread to the mix. In a typical runline, a bookmaker will set the spread at 1.5 points. Here's what a runline looks like in action:

• Royals +120 +1.5;

There is still a money line in this bet, but it is not as lopsided as we saw above thanks to the point spread. The -1.5 next to the Yankees means that they have to win by at least 2 runs for your bet to be considered a winner. Another way to look at this is that 1.5 runs will be subtracted from the Yankees' final score.

The Royals can now lose by up to 1 run and still be considered winners for your bet. The other way to look at this is that the Royals will have 1.5 runs added to their final score.

Futures

Futures are used in baseball to bet on events that are longer term than a single game. The most popular baseball futures bet is on who will win the World Series. At the beginning of the year, baseball betting sites publish a list of all the teams and the odds they are willing to pay on each team. You can then place a bet on any team to win the World Series.
